Back from hunt

Well I have been back since Sunday and I've almost made it through another term in school. As for the hunting it was fun as always but no I didn't get anything. I did however see several deer and yes even a trophy buck, and like normal it quit raining to give in to snow awesome!

counting down to hunt day

Here it is Monday night at this time on Wed. night God willing I will be in camp. Thurs. morning While the rest of the normal world is getting ready to carve turkey I will be in a forest stalking my dinners to come. I will be hunting a lower ground than I normally hunt do to most of Oregon is getting snow. My normal hunting elevation is getting alot of it, with any luck I should still be hunting in the snow though.
This year will see a few changes from my normal western Oregon hunt. The first of these changes, of course, is the lower elevation. The second change is I won't be the only one at camp this year I will be hunting with my niece and nephew. Third of the changes is I won't be the guide, all of which reasons I am looking forward to, especialy the second reason, and the first is I always like to explore new places. The third, well, is just a fringe benefit. I cant' wait I'm ready to hunt.
This is my entry for the week I won't blog again until I get back next week. My thanks giving wishes is that god bless the travelers and their families. May every one have a wonderful thanks giving and please drive careful, families depend on it. Until next week happy thanks giving to all and God bless.

ready to hunt

I have finished my last arrow for this late season, my heads are sharp and I have shot all my arrows multiple times. My arrows all fly well and my shooting seems pretty good. A few small personal kinks to work out with five days left to shoot, it should be easy to get this all in ballance. I feel better prepaired this season than normal both equipment and mentaly I'm ready to go. Maybe this year I'll put meat on the table if not oh! well, I'll have the experiance that's what counts.... Warning Black Tail, Elk and Cougar my medicine is strong!

make'n sensce of make'n medicine

As I said I am an archer who loves late season black tail hunting. This hunt is getting close for those of us archers in Oregon. I am however a little differant than the average of todays archers and that differance is my medicine. See as most archers are making sure there bows are sited, arrow and broadhead match all of which were purchased. I am making the bow and string ready by waxing them both for the likely rain, both of which I built my self. I am making my arrows ready by heat straightening wild rose shafts I gathered and scraped the bark from my self. After stratening I water proof my shaft and feather it with goose feathers I have stripped and trimed my self. I use goose feathers for this hunt because of there God given ability to shed water. My spirit is truly with my equipment making my tools my medicine, thus as bygone tribals may have said, I am making medicine. Now with that said I still have to ready myself you guessed it shoot, shoot and shoot more before during and after hunting. Oh! man I'm ready to go hunting.

tree stands for better or worse

Lately I have heard heckling over tree stand hunting, the last namely a rifle hunter. I would have to say what stands out most in my mind on the complaint would be how easy, unfair and nonhunter like tree stand hunting is. At this point I would have to say any people of whom has this opinion should try it you'll be surprised. First of all I think stand hunting is an effective ethical way to hunt. second of all I personally highly do not prefere this style of hunting. When tree stand hunting you are confined to staying put quitely in your tree for hours some people stay a hole day. While you are sitting you have to hope your quary will come to you and with in clean shooting range. To do this you must first of all things have the patience of Gaundi and shooting skills of Geronimo especialy if the wind is blowing your tree from too to froe, yeah! not for me.
Now with that said, I know for sure one of these hecklers feels it to be ethical to sit on a rim over looking a field with a 7mm magnum where the feasable range could be as much as 500 yds. This to me sounds alot simpler than my 20 yrd. max from any position, I stand or neel, tree or no tree.

hunting black tail vs. mule deer

I am a traditional archer from eastern Oregon, though I live in mule deer country I prefere hunting black tail on the west side. Since the laws have all but stopped cougar hunting I see more big cats than trophy mule deer. On the west side however my luck seems a little different. I go hunting in the rain forest and I usually see more than one trophy buck in the course of a weekend. Beyond seeing more these animals are exciting to hunt they are a definite challenge. Black tail deer are durable, shy and sly living in the thick brush of wet lands and steep ridges of the western rain forest, a trophy buck is a true challenge. Even a doe of this brood becomes a trophy especially in late Nov. and early Dec. when the rain won't stop except to give in to snow.
